Celebrating Wangari Maathai; Honoring Stories of Environmental Legacy
March 3rd is not an ordinary day, not for environmentalists, climate actors and hummingbirds. This year was extraordinary, with an exciting first of its kind session – The LIVErary. We gathered under the spirit of storytelling and environmental advocacy through the LIVErary, a dynamic initiative aimed at preserving community narratives. This special edition of the LIVErary brought together youth, media, CSOs, institutions and brands to celebrate the legacy of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai,an environmental icon whose unwavering dedication to sustainability and grassroots action continues to inspire generations.
The LIVErary, which merges storytelling with climate advocacy, provided a space for intergenerational dialogues where participants shared personal experiences and lessons on conservation, resilience, and the role of culture in climate adaptation. The Living books recounted their conservation practices, while young climate champions voiced their commitment to carrying forward Wangari Maathai’s vision through action and innovation.
One of the key highlights of the event was the monologue and documentary of Wangari Maathai’s works, inspiring reflections on the power of individual action in environmental restoration. Through storytelling, poetry, and dialogue, attendees connected with the rich history of Kenya’s environmental movement, reinforcing the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding our natural heritage.
This LIVErary session was more than just an event, it was a bridge between the past and the future, ensuring that the wisdom of those who walked before us continues to shape the sustainability efforts of today. As we commemorated Wangari Maathai Day, we reaffirmed our commitment to keeping her legacy alive, one story at a time. This opens an avenue for our advocacy programs throughout the year, with a focus on environmental education using various means.
We look forward to engaging with more audiences from diverse backgrounds and regions to co-create, co-design and ensure implementation and dissemination of information is accurate and up to date. We are committed to ensuring a sustainable, and effective delivery of climate science to communities.
